Reds Wane, Silvers Shine and more Giant Trout!
As we move toward the middle of August, there are a number of changes happening throughout our fishing destinations. On the Kenai River, sockeye salmon are definitely reaching the end of their run though scattered reports of fresh reds still being caught by those willing to put in their time have been reported. We have turned the page to silver fishing and it has been nothing short of spectacular. So far the run and the fishing is shaping up to be one of the stronger returns we have seen in recent memory and if it keeps up, it may just be one of the best ever! Our boats are seeing limit catches of big bright coho’s in short order and from the lower river all the way to Skilak Lake, silver salmon are present everywhere!
Trout fishing had definitely taken a a back seat to the silver fishing but still affords some great action after putting that last silver in the box. Unfortunately, the super high water we are seeing after recent rains has the trout scattered and off the bite in the section from Skilak to Bings but this will change soon enough as the water (hopefully) recedes to somewhat normal levels.
Fly Out Fishing for silver has also been very, very good! From the Kustatan to Buchatna Creek to Big River Lake, Coho have been present in great numbers and limit catches have been the rule! Water in all these locations has been higher than normal due to recent rainfall but this should start to subside as we have a few dasy without significant precipitation.
Salt Water fishing in both Seward, Cook Inlet and Homer has also been great as long as the wind cooperates and we should expect this to continue for the next week to ten days.
